HONG KONG, Tuesday, 3rd November 2020 – With just one more day to the US Presidential Election, one of Hong Kong’s leading marketing research firms CSG – has teamed up with Toluna to conduct a quick poll to determine the perception of who do Hong Kong people think will win the US presidential election?

The result suggests that 55% of Hong Kong population believed that Donald Trump will win the election.  A significantly higher proportion, 62% of the younger segment (18 – 34 years old) believed that Trump will win.  The older segment (55+) is split equally between Trump (50%) and Biden (50%). (fig.1)

The research also shows that those who believed that Trump will win are: Male (58%); with higher education (58% with graduate/ post graduate degrees); higher income (56% with HKD100K+ household income) and in more senior position (57% who are senior level managers).  In addition, a higher proportion of students (61%), believed that Trump will win.  In contrast, those who thinks that Biden will win are: older (55+); who are in middle management and lower income – household income HKD39K and below. (fig.1)

Despite a higher proportion of Hong Kong population who believed that Trump will win, in general, they see both Trump and Biden to be equally beneficial for the global economy.  However, the younger segment (18 – 34 years old) believed that Trump (56%) is more beneficial than Biden (44%) for the global economy whereas the older segment (55+) see Biden (69%) to be better than Trump (31%).  We also see differences in perception among gender whereby 54% of the male population believing that Trump will be better whereas 55% of the female population believing that Biden would be better for the global economy.  (fig.2)

Another interesting contrast is that 52% with graduate and post-graduate degrees believed Trump to have more positive impact for the global economy than Biden (48%).  We also see that a higher proportion (57%) of the mass affluent (Household income of HKD40K – 99K) seeing Trump being more beneficial for the global economy.  Once again, we see a significantly higher proportion of students (68%) who believed that Trump will benefit the global economy more so than Biden (32%). (fig.2)

This US Presidential Election quick poll survey in Hong Kong shows that the younger segment in Hong Kong, especially students, believed that Trump will win and that he would be better for the global economy.  The survey in Hong Kong shows that the students have significantly different views relative to the general population.  Despite the skew towards Trump from this survey, the margin between Trump and Biden is very close overall.
